At Gold Country at the weekend, my AT&T cell phone had no coverage (no surprises there) and I heard someone else say Nextel didn't work either. AT&T is really spotty on the Georgetown Divide (read: 'barely works anywhere').

My friend has Verizon and that got out fine. I'm
getting ready to switch over to them :)

Someone told me recently that they are getting ready
to put a cell phone cell in at Cool, which should help
greatly (hopefully it'll cover the Knickerbocker, but
I don't know about down in the canyon).

There are places you can get out via cell phone in the Auburn/Cool/Foresthill area:

There is a spot on the High Trail about half-way
between Browns Bar and hw-49.

You can get out from the shelf above hw-49 right
after you cross the road on the Tevis trail near
No-Hands

You can get out from where Foresthill and Driver's
Flat Roads intersect (but not down at the DF trailhead
parking lot)

Certain parts of FH mill site have intermittent cell
coverage. It goes on and off, so keep trying.

You can get out by standing on the bank opposite
the shops on the other side of the road in Cool.

Good luck - and let me know what you find out.

P.S. Was that you and Shaba hand-walking a few
miles before the first VC at GC? Shaba's chestnut?
You have short blond (?) hair? Green tack?
