Re: [RC] Round bales-anybody feeding? - Chris Paus

I don't use a feeder either. I figure the money I lose in wasted hay is saved in not having to buy bedding!

They sleep in it and it makes them happy! They waste a lot of square bale hay too, so, it's not a big deal.

I feed round bales all winter(thats 6 months here in Ohio!). I get them
from a farmer nearby. They are mostly orchard and brome grass and very,
very nice. They are about 1000-1200lbs and cost $20. One bale usually
lasts 5-7 days for my 4 horses. Other than the hay 24/7(pasture 24/7 in
summer) they also get beet pulp, a little sweet feed and free choice
loose salt and minerals. Mine always come out of winter fatter than
when it started! My vet always says I shouldn't feed round bales, but
to me the pros outweigh the cons. The very few times I have gotten one
with some mold, I just unroll it and they eat the good hay. Maybe I
haven't had a problem in 10 years because I keep so much hay in front
of them at all times. I usually get 3 or 4 bales at a time. I don't use
a round bale feeder, so they do waste some of it. They like to sleep on
the wasted hay, which is fine with me. In the spring I rake the wasted
and any leftover hay around my pasture.
