Also FWIW, I've seen multiple horses that pull pull
pull on bits, even curb/shanked bits, that will relax
almost instantly in a mechanical hackamore and stop
pulling.

And, on the other end of the spectrum, I put a mild
mechanical hack on a horse that had never felt a curb
chain or the nutcracker effect of a shanked bit, and
he almost flipped over when the mildest pressure was
placed on it.  

So, like everything else, it's all dependant on the
horse (and rider).
