"Splayed out" may suggest a more extreme position than I had in mind.  Most horses 
most of the time do not graze with their front feet side by side as if being stood up 
in a halter class.  They almost always have one foot in front of the other and 
sometimes well in front (splayed).  It's not that most horses can't eat with their 
front feet together, it's just that opening up the space between the shoulders makes 
eating off the ground easier.
