Sara, here's another source of info: go to http://aerc.org/ then go the "education" and scroll down the menu til you get to "mentors" (3rd from bottom). It's organized by state. There probably is someone close to you who has said they are willing to mentor newbies. Also, volunteer at rides! Just contact the ride manager and say you'd like to help. There is always stuff that needs doing! That is the best way to learn the ropes. And yes, endurance people are really friendly and helpful and eager to get new people off on the right foot.
