Re: [RC] re: spelling and such - Sisu West Ranch

There are many of us who find writing letters to be a large and daunting chore. Fortunately, email is not. In my case, and I suspect for others, it all goes back to 3rd grade. My teacher, Miss Collins, was of the old school. She had first taught with only a "normal school" (2-yr. degree) education. She was fond of assigning us the task of writing a "friendly letter". She careful explained that the recipient carefully examined such letters. If the recipient found mistakes like erasures, misspellings, poor penmanship, or grammar we would be judged to be ignorant and slovenly. My assignments never passed her muster. They were always returned full of red marks with orders to correct the errors and return. Sometimes I corrected the assignment 3 or 4 times.

Much later I found that secretaries, and eventually computers, can correct the most glaring errors. I still get nervous when writing a required letter to a respected old person, who will expect that such correspondence is hand written.

My bottom line: Please cut the spelling and grammatically challenged some slack. We should be a protected group but aren't.
