Re: [RC] endurance rider's - Stacy Sadar

Jesse,

Try training with someone else on parts of the trail.  My Arab walks very SLOOOOOW.  So slow that we have to trot to catch up to anyone because he falls so far behind when we all walk.  But he has a nice trot speed.  I like the slow walk because it lowers his heart rate very nice.  He has a nice trot and canter speed though.  My friend brought her beefy quarter horse to a race to ride with me.  Her jog trot QH had a nice pace when trying to keep up with her buddy my Arab.  Her heart rate was at the high end of the scale at the vet checks, but she was fine and ended up coming in 5th!  The funny part was that she was so muscled up with the bulk instead of the nice lean muscles that they had difficulty using the heart monitors to check her rate.  The more my friend rode her QH in different events...endurance, barrels, pleasure...the better she got at knowing what pace to take when.  Just takes time. Good luck! :)

I am completely new to endurance riding and I am thinking of bringing a quarter horse I just acquired to an event.

I?ve had her out several times to train but I am having some trouble getting her to move at a decent pace (6 mph).

She either walks ?dude ranch? slow or she trots.

Any idea?s on getting her to a decent race-pace?
