Re: [RC] re: vertigo, motion sickness in the dark - Barbara McCrary

Many years ago, our whole family rode Tevis. We took an extra horse as a backup, but when all of them passed the pre-ride check, we had a leftover. A friend of ours hadn't such good luck; her mare failed to pass the check. We loaned her our extra horse for the ride. She rode with our daughters, all through the ride, I think. Poor woman, she became nauseated at Michigan Bluff and hung onto the horse's neck, throwing up over his shoulder periodically. This would necessitate a slow-down, while our daughters went on ahead. As soon as the rider recovered for a time, the horse would gallop to catch up with our girls and their horses, as they were all "stablemates". Our horse earned our friend her Tevis buckle, but she was one sick puppy for much of the ride.

Oh, poster child for endurance!
Dyane (who gets dizzy anytime, anywhere, but not, thank God, necessarily in
the dark)

I can't believe no one has mentioned being stuck with me when I throw up
on a 100 miler! Guys, some of us just get motion sick in the dark and
there are things that help, but no cure. Being in shape and hydrated are
a plus. Chewing ginger candy does seem to help. Dramamine makes me
sicker and sleepy...same with patches. Bracelets do nothing. I've
finished 19 100 milers. On four of those I didn't vomit. Two of them
because I finished in daylight, one because it was not downhill at
all(downhill in the dark is the worst), and one I was miserably nauseated,
but for some reason did not vomit. I have given up eating the great
hamburgers at Jack Creek on the BigHorn 100 because it's a waste of
time...if you know what I mean. I've just learned to live with the fact
that this is what I will do and all of my friends just expect it. BTW,
the horses don't seem to care! Kind of like a dog, they love you anyway.
Cindy
