Re: [RC] Extended Power Trot or Canter? - Barbara McCrary

Many years ago, I'd ridden four horses that all sustained torn suspensories after a period of vigorous training.  I figured I had to be doing something wrong and began looking for a common denominator.  I found it when I realized that, loving a really FAST trot, and finding each of these horses capable of doing it, I was pushing them into faster and faster trotting.  The hyper-extension at the fast trot was tearing suspensories.  So to answer your question, I would keep the trot to a less extended one, and alternate with some easy cantering.

Subject: [RC] Extended Power Trot or Canter?

I have been under the immpression that it is better for a horses legs to trot fast than to canter, however I recently got some advice from someone very experienced that trotting fast is really hard one a horses legs and cantering is much better.  I'd like some more input on this please,

 thank you,
Lisa Smith
