Re: [RC] What type of training? - Truman Prevatt

The best place for a new rider to learn to rate a horse is by doing CTR's. Yes I know there is a lot of BS in CTR's but there is no better way for a rider to learn what a 6.2 mph pace is and how to get it and maintain it. Once a rider has the experience and they can't manage to get a horse to respond at endurance rides a year of CTR's for the horse will do wonders. Many riders in FL will always start off with CTR's before they ever do an endurance ride. I'm not saying you have to do that but the CTR is a wonderful place to teach a horse about pacing.

And if you want to drive the point home take him to a 3 day 100 - where they have to go out three days in a row at a 6.2 mph pace. It even works on racehorses that were bred to run.
