RE: [RC] TV Program about Endurance riders and wildlife encounters - Nancy Sturm

Hi Ginger:

My daughter and I were riding on a logging road in Southern Oregon last
week and met a nice sleepy ginger-colored black bear on the road. The only
ones in this encounter who were spooked were the riders. We considered
turning back, but really wanted to continue on up the road, so we got off
the unconcerned horses and started walking toward the bear waving our arms
and giving it instructions. Finally it ambled up the hillside above the
road and disappeared into the trees.

These are a very passive bear, a threat mostly to blackberries and apple
orchards. I'm sure riders where there are agressive species of bears would
think we were pretty foolish.

Hi there;
I'm an AERC member and a television producer of documentaries (Cloud:
Wild Stallion of the Rockies, Ultimate Guide: Horses, etc.)I'm working on a
program series idea regarding sports and wildlife. We have interest in a
program about endurance riders who have had encounters on the trail with
wildlife. The only one I personally have had was a snake that struck at my
Spanish Mustang, Flint, and I ended up on the ground. Not a great one for
our purposes. But, I thought some of you might have better stories about
wildlife encounters. Please email me with any ideas at your earliest
convenience. Thanks so much, Ginger Kathrens www.taurusproductions.net
