Several people answered me privately with the correct answer, but didn't
share with ridecamp:  Boyd Zontelli rode the BigHorn 100 trail in 1984 at
the Race of Champions without a girth.  His horse had a girth sore and it
was the only way Boyd felt they could finish.  Anyone who knows the BH
trail, knows this is quite a feat.  Cindy
