Re: [RC] My horse's face is swollen... - Jody Rogers-Buttram

Hey,

I just had the exact same thing with one of our horses.....last week.  Found her in the pasture that morning with the left side of her face swollen, really badly.  Her eye and all the way down to the muzzle.  Took her to the vet, he said it was an allergic reaction, most likely to a bite.  I too couldn't find any bite marks or bumps.  She was given some antibiotics, and DMSO IV.  Went home and the next morning she was nearly normal.  But here is the thing.  I think I know what caused it.  Here is Alabama, we have lots of fire ants.  I think she laid down in an ant hill that night to sleep,  most likely stretched out flat on her side and stuck her head in an ant hill.  Do you have fire ants????  Not much you can do to get rid of the little buggers.

Hi all,

Just need some advice.

My 4 yr old's face is swollen today. Just the left half, from about 2
inches below her eye, to the top of her left nostril. The area is minimally
warmer than the other side of her face. It is pitting edema, (when I push
the pad of my thumb into the swelling, the print leaves half as much of an
indentation.) She does not have discharge coming from her eyes or nostrils.
I could not find a spot that looked like a bite from an insect or snake.
She is evenly swollen between her jowls, no lymph nodes though.

She was the first horse to greet me in the pasture. She looks bright and
happy. Ate the carrot rounds I gave her, but did drop one after "mouthing"
it. I tried to grab her tongue and take a look in her mouth, but I am not
very good at that so I wasn't able to check for stuff in her mouth. We did
have an equine dentist work on her teeth 2 months ago.

Any thoughts? I'd be glad to call the vet if necessary, or is this just an
allergic response to something that will go away?
