RE: [RC] Accupunture - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

Somewhere in the rules is something about not doing anything that involves
invasive procedures, or some such wording, so it's no go during a
competition. No reason why you can't use it before or after. I did my
post-doc acupuncture certification in '03 and I use it a fair amount in
practice, especially for sore backed, tight muscled horses. I like it a
lot, the treatment tends to 'stick' better than just another round of bute.
However, I'm not a proponent of invisible energy meridians and such...I do
believe in directly influencing a peripheral neural pathway innervating a
muscle group with a small electrical current. I do it on myself all the
time when I've come home really tired and sore. It's essentially the same
things as EMS or TENs, except by delivering the current with a needle, I can
do it more specifically, a lot deeper into the tissue, and without the
resistance of crossing hair or skin. Very effective modality.

Subject: [RC] Accupunture

Does AERC have any restrictions on accupunture, other than not doing it
during a competition? Anybody out there doing it?
