RE: [RC] WNV Question for Susan G. - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

Susan, why do you prefer the Fort Dodge over the Merial ? I just did the Merial one this afternoon.

Just a personal preference.  The Merial has a higher incidence of severe adverse reactions, including a few firsthand reports from newly white-haired vets describing near-death experiences.  The most common ones I’ve heard were high fevers, laminitis and anaphylaxis (a severe allergic-type reaction).  The reports of severe adverse reactions from the Fort Dodge are very low, and we haven’t had any in our practice after administering thousands of them.  Also, the Fort Dodge is very effective, with a good track record.  The Merial is also effective, but not statistically significantly more so than FD.  So, all things being equal, I’ll take the one least likely to harm my patients.

Nope, I don’t get a kick back from Fort DodgeJ

I strongly prefer the Fort Dodge product over the Merial product.  As previously discussed, I like vaccinating in the pectoral muscles.  If she does get a little sore, then a gram of bute for a day or so should ease the speed bumps.
