[RC] Bits - I'm Confused - Jonni

A true Dr. Bristol is not as gentle of a bit as some others. The center link
it a little longer than the Frenchlink, and has a square edge to it, that
can dig in to the tongue on some horses. Might be what happened, and why the
head went up. Frenchlink snaffles have a shorter center link, and almost
look like a figure 8, with smoother edges. I have had good luck with these
bits, and it is a favorite of mine, especially for starting the horses. I'd
consider looking for someone who does dressage, to help you with the horse.
Understanding how to ask for the horse to go in a round balanced frame is
the first step, before deciding which bit is best. That of course, after
having the horses teeth checked, and make sure the saddle is not digging in
to the horse, making him want to hollow his frame, to escape the pain.

I have an Arabian I just bought a few weeks ago. Last weekend I tried 4
or 5 bits on him in the arena to see what his reaction was. He went
ballistic (very high-headed, head-throwing, couldn't stop/slow him, no
directional control) with a Dr. Bristol double-jointed snaffle and also an
English Hackamore.<<<
