I agree with all of this...I always walk the trailer to check my hitch and tires and windows and truck tires, too.  But, I'm still buying that spare pin and stashing it somewhere.  Hard to believe the evil that exists in this world of ours.

I watched a rider leaving a camp literally plow up the pavement of the
road with the jack to her gooseneck. She hadn't pulled the pin to snap it
all the way up and there was a little hump leaving camp. :-P I always
check the hitch after going in for coffee or whatever. Take time on a
bumper hitch to feel of the nut on the bottom too. Twice through the
years mine has worked loose and been towards the bottom of the threads.
