RE: [RC] grease crayon - Adam and Jannelle

Yes, DMSO does penetrate readily. In fact, it is the standard in many
tests for absorption. But the skin is an amazing thing. It blocks lots of
"stuff" from getting in most molecules from coming thru the skin as they
are way too big to penetrate. Generally, using DMSO topically is not an
issue for this very reason. BUT the most important reason to not use DMSO
on an endurance horse is that (my husband tells me) it is a prohibited
substance by the AERC. It is a very effective anti-inflammatory and I
would suspect it is for this reason that there are issues in using it.

I can't give you the biochemical explanantion (and I may be dead wrong)
but it's my understanding that DMSO applied on the surface is quickly
absorbed through the skin along with everything under it. It has many
medical uses both ex- and internally but, again this is my
understanding, has to be used very carefully to avoid bringing unwanted
stuff (such as bacteria)inside the horse.
Check with your vet or maybe some list member more knowledgeable than
me will respond.

I have found a marvelous way to remove grease crayon, worked almost
instantly.

DMSO, a solvent used for various other purposes, applied to the grease
pencil and then rubbed with a bot block, and the grease came right
off!! I rinsed it well with soap and water to remove it
Can anyone tell me if there is some reason not to use this stuff to
remove grease pencil?
I hve tried so many other products, but nothing ever really worked.
