Depends on what you mean by work. Even the expensive survey units will no see the signal in heavy trees all the time. If you are only looking for time transfer and location you can sit in a spot long enough that usually as the satellites move you will find a favorable geometry and get a reading. However, if you are looking for suitable geometry for signal reception all the time in foliage - which is require for such things as speed and trail distance estimation you will be disappointed.
