Re: [RC] trailer shavings--inhaling - heidi

Just spent some time practicing trailer loading--also spent sometime in
the trailer with fresh shavings. Ended up feeling like I was inhaling
fine dust particles after a short time with resulting cough--has anyone
else noticed this? What it must do to the horses respiratory tract
after a haul. What are the alternatives? Do those who trailer alot wet
down the shavings? Any thoughts/ideas?

Erica, I've had horses get off the trailer in noticeable respiratory
distress from blowing shavings, and have also had some with corneal
abrasions from getting the shavings in their eyes. I'm not at all fond of
shavings in the trailer.

Wetting them definitely helps, although they can dry out pretty quickly on
dry, hot days. Just plain sand is an alternative as well for absorbing
urine.

Heidi
