Fw: [RC] e'lytes and supplements - Laura Hayes

Well, that is part of what I am basing my practices on now--in the 80s I rode the tar out of Azzor Kishi (Oz).  He went FAST every time out and went over 3000 miles over 10 years with **no elytes**...never one metabolic pull.

Laura,

I  won't flame you about this....in fact, I hope I don't get flamed for what I'm about to say.

I have seen it said on ridecamp that "we don't want to hear about the good old days", but I truly think there is something to be learned by comparing then and now.  In the 70's, I rode my stallion, Cyam on over 1000 miles of fast rides.  We did the Hurricane Color Country in 3 hrs and 15 mins, and no, it wasn't short.  We basically galloped the whole ride.   Cyam never saw an electrolyte, cause we didn't even know what they were yet.  Now, I am a "turtle" rider and cram 6-8 doses of electrolytes down my horse each ride.  HUH???  Just doesn't make sense to me.

I give my horses electrolytes now, as I have bought into the idea that we are following the developing sciences of what is needed for "competing".   But I still can't help looking back and wondering why most of our horses did so well on just good hay and grain?  No electrolytes, no glycogen loader, no pro-bi, no fancy all in one, super duper mulit feeds.

Subject: [RC] e'lytes and supplements

I have stopped using everything but Se/E and Cosequin.  I did 1200+ miles on five different horses last year with no e'lytes at all.  I realize I did not set the world on fire in the speed department, but I honestly think that all this shit people are giving their horses is not helping and may hinder the horse's well being.

I know...someone will tell me I have no hard scientific evidence, but my formerly colicy mare has not coliced once in over 600 miles of competition since I stopped shoving caustic crap down her throat - and I tried the milder brands and different size doses AND adding Neighlox to no avail.

I am glad to see the French team say they use no oral supplements and are successful.  Maybe our national team would have been more successful if those poor horses had not been NG TUBED with a very caustic electrolyte at least 6 times in two weeks before the WEC.

Flame away- this is something I feel very strongly about.
