Re: [RC] Postive Coggins test in Chico, CA??? - Truman Prevatt

You will not get into FL - or more correctly across the Suwanee River - without a coggins and health certificate. You will not get flagged through an Ag station in FL and if you go by one you will be run down with flashing blue lights, forced to return and show your papers. FL is one of the only states that really seems to take checking entry (and exit) seriously. I've driven all over hell half acre and much of the US without ever being checked - except for FL.

However, the last few times I've entered GA, I have been pulled over on the road by an ag inspector and had my papers checked. I hear they are also on the prowl in KY.

In TX, ALL horses leaving your property HAVE to have a negative coggins within the past yr. ALL organized require showing it. For a while some were checked while riding along the road. A few yrs ago, the Houston Fatstock Trail ride turned away some riders because they were not carrying the actual coggins papers on them, even tho they were checked when they signed up to do the ride and the papers were in their vehicle. I set up a 3 ring binder and carry the papers in the tow vehicle.
Traveling horses have to have a negative coggins. HOWEVER, I have driven with horses across the US and have not had to show them. Seems if one only has a few horses they are not too worried. I stopped whenever there was a sign that said ALL livestock must check in. Last Oct, I was waved thru from NM, AZ and CA. No check points going thru LA, MS, AL, GA, SC,NC. I have heard some have been recently set up since the West Nile fever got to spreading around. Just MY experience. One should check the websites or with your local vet before traveling and being disappointed. mas
