What is SCID? Layman's terms please. Severe Combined Immune Deficiency. Clinically, the foals are born unable to produce either B-lymphocytes or T-lymphocytes. (There are some other conditions in which one or the other is lacking...) The B-lymphocytes are the ones that produce antibodies, and the T-lymphocytes are the ones that do cell-mediated immunity. Consequently, the resulting foals have no defense against infection, once the maternal antibodies from the colostrum are gone. The condition also exists in humans--think "bubble babies" that have to live in a completely sterile environment to survive...
