Re: [RC] Tail eating - heidiI have a 10 month old filly, Spice, that has a major tail fetish. Her best buddy, two year old Honey, now has a tail that is only 2 inches past the tail bone and her forelock is fading fast too. I've separated them, but with Honey's docile personality, the only pen I could put her in was one by herself as she won't assert herself against the big boys and gets chased too much. She's starting to get depressed, so I'd like to put her back in the mare pen, but I don't want her to lose all of her tail! Is there anything I can soak it in that will stay and will work and won't damage the hair? Nearly every case of tail-chewing that I've dealt with over the years has been due to a selenium deficiency, and once I understood that, has been halted by an E-Se injection. Other deficiencies have also been reported as causes. I'd worry more about pinpointing the deficiency and treating it than about soaking tails. (And no, before I understood the problem, I never did come up with anything that worked for more than a couple of days on manes and tails to stop the problem.)
