Re: [RC] [RC] trimming for riding - Kristene SmutsThey want the bottom face of the coffin bone to be flat on the ground - usually this means the heels are shortened up as much as possible.>> Right, I'm still trying to learn how to judge the angle of the pedal bone without X-rays. Also, I'm learning to trim my horses myself, so my education continues in leaps and bounds! On the discussion about the angle of the pedal bone, I grabbed my horse "bible" "Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners" by Captain M Horace Hayes, edited by Peter D Rossdale. On p. 294, they show that the pedal bone is angled at 10 degrees to the sole. The heel and front of foot is at the same angle, which is in line with the pastern. It also shows that there is a bit of heel - logically because the pedal bone is angled. It also shows the pull of the flexor tendon and what effects it has on the mechanics of the hoof. Then, on p. 237, they show more of the same kind of thing, including what happens when the pedal bone rotates, as when laminitis is present. Bearing in mind that this book has an overwhelmingly British / race horse flavour, I find it interesting that the majority of what the Captain wrote about all those years ago can be applied to our modern endurance horses.
