one rule used to be:

When you can do 12 miles in 2 hrs you are ready to do a 25 but not a
racing one.

When you can do 25 miles in 3 hrs, you are ready to do a 50.

I always figured that when a horse could do 15 miles of not-too-difficult
terrain in under 2 hours, and do it easily and comfortably with good
recoveries, he was ready for 50...  Very few of our horses have ever done
25 miles in training before they do their first 50s, unless they have had
careers as ranch horses first.
