[RC] Conditioning help - kit kat

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to ask for some advise. I own a standardbred mare that is 13 yrs old. She has never done endurance and was only broke last year. Now, she is in pretty good physical condition as I have been riding her quite a bit, but have slacked off in the last month due to some family commitments. Our first ride is going to be at the end of april.

Now, She averagly paces(shes a pacer) between 10 to 20 km .. She goes averagly around 15km an hour. We clocked her last week going 40 km when I was on her... and she was not full out. But she is MOST comfortable around 15 to 20 km.

Now, for my conditioning. Last month, I had her go 5.5 miles in about an hour and 15 mins. Is that good? I alternate between pacing and walking and she barely sweats when im asking this from her. I always get off half a mile from home and walk back. (she walks way faster then me so she goes in circles... gotta learn to speed my shorty legs up...lol)

So, What I want to know, IS, if I condition her 3 times a week at around 5 to 6 miles, and slowly increase our speed is that good enough for her to be able to do a 22 in april? OR, should after I get my time down... add more miles on? OR, should I add more miles and keep at the same alternating speed im doing now and then add speed?

Im just trying to figure this out for my horse and me because I want our first year to be awesome. Any conditioning plans would be totally welcome.

thanks a bundle,

Sarah + Clover Penny

Of course things aren't perfect, perfect doesn't exist on this earth.
Doesn't mean we won't go on trying to get better at what we do. Besides, if
everything was perfect today, what would you do tomorrow? Slamming each
