[RC] re: training bit - Teresa Van Hove

the bit that's on his bridle right now (and i
suppose it's the same one he was being ridden in
before) is a full cheek twisted jointed snaffle. should i re-start him in something more mild? a
racing D perhaps?

YES! -your instincts are great.

A racing D-ring snaffle of moderate thickness is your best bit for re-starting this horse; It will give you good lateral control if you need to do some tight circles. If you find he works better in a curb bit, a port bit with medium shanks is a milder bit. -- I prefer to go to a flat curb chain (from a curb strap) if I'm not getting a good whoa with a port bit rather than going to a harsher bit, and I've always shopped around to find a curb chain with links which lie flat and are 1/2" wide instead of thinner -- I think these are sometimes called english curb chains.

Cheers,
Teresa and Grey Moun and Shade (and Cindy who was one I used a curb bit on, and she did need a curb chain rather than just a strap)
