Packers routinely tie a string of horses or mules together and happily go
down the trail.  One of their secrets is the use of a weak link between each
animal.  Cheap ones use twine, others use leather or wire bent into a "C"
shape.  If you use wire, be sure that it will bend and release at the proper
tension.  The same with twine, some synthetic binder twine is quite strong.
