[RC] ponying - A. Perez

Before the ice-age descended on the east coast, I had started
ponying my filly a bit. I too am concerned about dropping the
lead and the hazards of tying the lead. With a western saddle,
you can dally (take a wrap) around the horn which will pull
loose if released but make it harder for the lead to be
inadvertantly yanked from your hand. However, having only an
english saddle, I have thought about using a light twine or a
leather lace to tie the end of the lead to a d-ring on the
saddle: the thought being that if the lead were dropped it would
be attached and could be retreived, but in a real wreck, the
twine would easily break. I have not had a change to try this
yet... I'll report back after the thaw.

The biggest challange I had ponying so far was that my filly
lagged behind my fast-walking TWH gelding. It took her a bit to
realize she had to keep up, but she did catch on. I plan do
alot of ponying in the pasture, and to take her on lots of walks
along the road before I pony her on the road, though.
