Thank you SO much for  saying this.  You said what I wanted to but you
did it better.  I think a lot of people think the snaffle looking
mouthpiece is a snaffle whether it has shanks or not.  My understanding
is that any mouthpiece without shanks is a snaffle and any bit with
shanks (even with the snaffle looking mouth) is a curb.

Yep.  Or put more simply--if it works directly off the mouth, it is a
snaffle.  If it has leverage, it is a curb.  Basically, if it has shanks,
it has leverage--but even a bit like the Kimberwicke, when used on the
lower setting, has leverage and becomes a mild curb.
