[RC] hackamores - Julie Fuller

Keep in mind that a "cowboy snaffle" with long shanks is not a snaffle at
all, but actually a curb bit with the added harshness of having all that
leverage to "nutcracker" the lower jaw. It is about one of the most
painful bits I can imagine. I can imagine it was just excruciating for
her, given the pathology present as well.

Heidi

Thank you SO much for saying this. You said what I wanted to but you did it better. I think a lot of people think the snaffle looking mouthpiece is a snaffle whether it has shanks or not. My understanding is that any mouthpiece without shanks is a snaffle and any bit with shanks (even with the snaffle looking mouth) is a curb.

I agree with both of you on this one..... And like I said, I learn all the time! This was several years ago, and was a great learning experience for me. I'm just sorry that the horses suffered my lack of knowledge, but I doubt there is anyone amoung us that hasn't learned a lesson or two at the expense of our equine friends. It pays to listen... to each other AND our horses!
