[RC] Weight division question answer - Michael Maul

In response to:"How does one get an accurate weight of what division they are in? Does the
weight include loaded packs, water, saddle, bridle, etc?

**** It's everything you carry on the horse. I believe the FEI requirements for water bottles is that they be sealed if the water is to be counted. All tack/contents plus everything on you.

 Is there any allowance
if you are on the borderline of a weight division?

*** You usually are not weighed at the start. You need to be within 4% of the minimum at the end when/if weighed. 4% is considered a reasonable allowance for weight loss during the ride and scale inaccuracies. That means a HW starting at 212 lbs can go down to 203.5 lbs at the end and still be a HW.

Can you change weight
divisions at a ride?

*** No. Whatever you state at a ride has no effect on the results being entered in the official records in the AERC office. You can ride as a FW if you wanted to at a ride but if your renewal for the ride season stated you were a MW - then your results would be entered for the MW division. This might mean the awards given out at a ride for weight divisions could be wrong.

Let's say you were a MW and then lost weight do you change to
a LW?
***** Only if you cross the boundary from MW to LW with all your tack. If you did - you need to notify the AERC office before June 1. You can change your weight division(and region) up to that date. After that date your weight division can't be changed again until the next ride season starts on Dec. 1. If you are a HW on June 1 and lose 100 lbs - all your results for the rest of the season will still be entered as HW.

Obviously it is advantages to be a light middle weight if you are going
for points or whatever, but what about the everyday rider who finishes at the
back. Does it really matter?"

***** No in my view...
