Re: [RC] Break-ins & thefts at Auburn Overlook, Rattlesnake Bar & Sterling Point - DaNel Resha

I try to keep nothing of value in the vehicle that I am driving and to keep the doors unlocked.  That way when the creaps look in they see nothing and if they do decide to look inside then hopfully they will try the door before punching the lock.

I know sometimes you just have to lock stuff up but when I know I'm going riding I leave my purse at home and take out my drivers license and check card.  That way I have ID and money.  I leave my purse at home.  Nothing to lock up.

My boyfrend went to the movies in May.  He went to the 1 pm movie and when he came out at 3 pm his Blazer had been stolen.  In the middle of the day.  When it was recovered (thankfull the same day) both locks were punched out and the steering column had been broken.  The CD player and speakers had been stolen, CD's were left, a few toys were left, and my 50 # bag of cat litter had been stolen.  (He picked it up before going to the movies)

It is very frustrating to know that there is nothing we can do to stop these criminals from destroying & stealing our property when we are out riding the trails. It feels justified to say we should hide in the bushes and "@#$%" the creeps. Especially when you see how difficult it is to convict and then how little punishment most crooks get if they are convicted of the crimes. Probably, you'd get more jail time by making an insincere threat to the crook on an obscure website, than they'd get if convicted of the theft.

Not looking forward to coming back to my rig with the locks punched out, even if nothing is taken.

"... Sorry, but I don't think I'm being too harsh, am I.."

Don't get me wrong, I am not against the use of force by citizens to protect their life, but announcing to the world that people should be shot is dangerous rhetoric.  It could be construed as a threat.  Threats can land you in jail.  I don't know for sure, but I suspect that California law also would take a dim view of a citizen shooting someone for a property crime, if no life was in danger.

If you are serious about doing something constructive, hide at a trail head, make good video's of the perps and their car license numbers, call the police when they break into the first car and testify at the trial.
