[RC] re: fitness - Cindy Collins

I'm late to this discussion, but did want to share. This is a very tough
issue in the Mt. region for those of us who work. It's dark and cold
(probably windy) when I leave for work and when I return. Usually, my
first spring rides become part of my conditioning. I just go very slowly,
8-9 hours for a 50. One of the best things I've done in recent years is
to take a weekly dressage or jumping lesson during the winter (in an
indoor arena). Not only has it greatly improved my riding, my control
over my horses, and been a stress reliever...it truly has helped keep some
level of conditioning on my horses through the winter months. If I can
get them out for a long training ride on the weekend and do one lesson
each week (my instructor is an eventer, so she works us hard), my horses
can successfully complete their first 50 in May going slowly. If the
weather and daylight cooperates and I get to do more, it's gravy. Cindy
