RE: [RC] Riding Safety on the Trail - Ranelle Rubin

I agree with all you have said Katie, If I am going into the wilderness,
I also carry a water bottle in my pack that has a water filter. I fill
the bottle with water from home and use it as a spare. The filter is in
a ziplock in my pack in case of emergency. (Too many microbiology
classes, I guess)..The idea of a course of flagil is very unappealing to
me. Katie, keep in touch this spring and summer and I will gladly show
you the Pacific Crest Trails we visit...

Subject: [RC] Riding Safety on the Trail

Hey Ridecampers,
I'm wondering what's in everyone's saddle packs. The cougar
thread made me
think of safety... I always try to keep bear pepper spray with me in
case I
find myself needing to scare off a large animal. Then again, think of
the mess
it would be if the pepper spray drifted downwind and got in my horses
eyes!
Ack- not good!
So, what does everyone take out on a usual ride? My guess would
be something
like: EZ boot, pocket knife, water, energy bar, a few band-aids, twine
or
rope, hoofpick, and vetrap or duct tape. That is what I carry with me
usually,
but I should probably add a few more things to the list: rain poncho or

garbage bag, flash light, whistle...
I also like the idea of having a fanny pack on me so that if the
horse and I
get separated, I have my cell phone and some safety items with me. Does
anyone
do this? I know there are nifty packs that strap around a person's
ankle also.
I think I saw those on the sportack website. Has anyone tried those
out?
Katie in CA --and I'll admit... the first thing I put in my saddle
pack is
carrots :)--
