Re: [RC] Adelante and EDPP - Dyane Smith

Dyane, this problem is not black-and-white, but comes in all shades in
between. Yes, some horses are just nervous, and will come around with
experience. But that said, you will see progress with the problem by the
second or third ride, and should have the problem well in hand within just
a few rides if the horse IS cut out to do this. And horses that have had
their homework done (have camped out prior to coming to compete) rarely
experience a problem with this at all, IF they are suited to doing this
sort of thing.

No, I doubt CTR would be any better--it is still a group camping scene,
and going down the trail.

If you ARE having some difficulty with this and DO want to try to
"convert" this horse to this sport, I'd suggest spending a whole bunch of
weekends out horse camping with groups of people and just dawdling around
on the trails when you're there. If that gets to be ho-hum and old hat,
then he might be ready to come back and try ER.

But if, after a handful of ERs he is not having fun and is not relaxed in
camp, do him a kindness and find him another job.

Heidi

Good advice, Heidi. Fortunately, we have a number of good trails around
that you can camp at: some with corrals; others where you can tie to the
trailer. Also, I belong to Back Country Horsemen and they have camp outs.
So, I'll try all that.

Also, now that I understand more about Adelante, I realize that Fox is very
calm compared to him. Fox still doesn't drink away from home, but I think
he's considering it--he did take a sip out of a creek last summer.

But, bottom line, that's true. If he doesn't like it, we can do other
things. He loves plain trail riding and I have a back up horse that is a
tank -- EDPP is his middle name.
