Re: [RC] Torn Tendon - heidi sowards

Sheila, I suggest contacting Tom Ivers (tivers@xxxxxxx) and
also checking out his website. racingequine.com or
something similar, you can do a search under horse racing
Tom Ivers and it will come up. He will suggest the TENS
machine, walking and ice among other things. He's
controversial on RC, however, I've seen too many horses
with torn/bowed tendons come back sound from his technique.
You can tell him I sent you!!! Please contact him, I've
sent other guests who've posted here to him and they are
more than happy with the results, even their vets can't
believe the progress and recovery they see!

Morrow mountain is close to me, Sheila. I'm not sure who
your vet is or how bad the torn tendon is but I'm using
Dr Smith from Southridge and she's supposed to be very
good. My trainer referred me to her and I've been nothing
but happy, she's called every few days to check on Star,
spent quite a bit of time ultrasounding and checking her,
etc. She feels like even though Star partially tore all 3
tendons she'll come through sound with proper rehab and
corrective shoeing. I also found a corrective shoer who
does mostly distance horses, he's due out soon.

Any advice will be appreciated. Her injury occured the
week of Thanksgiving and she has been in the stall with
walking started the 4th week from 5 min. once a day to
now 15 min. twice a day. I am keeping her leg wrapped
24/7 with quilted bandaging as the sport boot caused
sores on her pastern. I would like to use a sport boot
(currently have the Classic Equine)to exercise her when
the sores heal, but would like to know what would be a
good one to purchase that will allow her leg to breath
along with the support she will need. For now, with
walking, I guess the quilted bandages are doing okay.

I got Ortho Equine boots on order because they breathe.
Not sure how well they work, time will tell on that. My
mare is having problems under her pillowwraps with fungus
and thrush.

Good luck with your Mare!
Steph
