[RC] if attacked when riding...... - Jonni Jewell

I used to do a mounted patrol job. We were taught what to do if we were ever
grabbed, or our horses were grabbed ahold of while riding. Do not try to
pull AWAY, but go TOWARDS the attacker. If they have both reins, do what
you can to get your horse spinning, or moving towards them, and they will
let go. If they have grabbed your arm or leg, if you try to pull away,
chances are, you will end up on the ground, at the feet of the one attacking
you. Go towards them. Kick, spur, yell at that horse to move it. We would
practice this at the patrol school. The person on the ground was always an
experienced horse person. I tell you what, experienced horse people will let
go, and get away from that animal. Imagine one who might not be as
experienced, when a 1000 pound horse is coming over on top of them. Of
course, the best thing is to not let them get close enough to you or your
horse to grab ahold. Excellent reasons all horses should indeed yield to the
leg, move away, and also back up. During conversations while on patrol, if a
person stepped a little too close as we talked, we could quietly ask the
horse to take a step over, or back, keeping the distance.

Hopefully no one will ever have to use these skills, but a clear mind, and
game plan could keep you from getting hurt.

Jonni
