I suspect I would have altered my story to tell the sheriff that I had been threatened since I would have seen the threat to my horse as a threat to myself.  I imagine you could sue them in a civil court for harassing you if you actually got hurt or they hurt the horse, but criminal would be so much better for them. I guess I don't get the problem if you're on the road and not actually on their property. But some people are just nutso.
