[RC] Sterilizing Mustangs - Dyane Smith

Unfortantly to successfull reduce populations via
sterilzation, it is the females that need to be
sterlized. Otherwise any uncastrated male from the
herd or elsewhere can impregnate the mare.

A number of years ago, I heard a vet speak at a Back Country Horseman
Conference. It was his position that the technology was available or could
be made available in the near future (this was some 7-8 years ago) to inject
stallions from the air. It would not be 100% sterilization but would reduce
the number of foals conceived while avoiding the need to disrupt the
established bands. According to this vet, whose name I forget, the federal
government did not want to spend the money to do that because there was
political pressure to keep up the roundups.

I don't personally know much about this, but I do know that one of the major
downsides of government is that political pressure from special interests
groups will almost always derail an otherwise intelligent solution.

Dyane (multi-generational government and still, sometimes, proud of it)
