[RC] Mustangs - Nat Nelson

<<Haven't they done some type of sterilization to
other
animal populations by way of shots or putting out
something they eat to sterilize them? Couldn't that
be done with Mustangs? Or capturing and castrating
males? Something to cut down on these populations.>>

Unfortantly to successfull reduce populations via
sterilzation, it is the females that need to be
sterlized. Otherwise any uncastrated male from the
herd or elsewhere can impregnate the mare. The
procedure for sterlizing mares is costly and
potentially dangerous to the mare - especially if they
have an adverse reaction to the anthestic. Then there
is the question of who is going to fund this - yep the
tax payer.

<<The other solution is to increase their popularity
for adoption by a public relations campaign to make
them more desireable.>>

The BLM has done extensive advertising on the
mustangs. Just about every horse magazine and cowboy
related magazine there are ads regarding mustangs
every month. Do you realize how much money is invested
in that alone?! The BLM also has a website which costs
money to run and publishes brochures and flyers
regarding mustangs. So they all ready have an
extensive public relations campaign. Unfortantly it
takes just the right type of person to want to take on
a wild horse - a noble feat, but lets face it the
supply exceeds the demand.

<<Magazine ads featuring champion mustangs would be
good too.>>

They do that all ready. Plus the BLM publishes success
stories and submits them to national magazines. I
believe the BLM has exhausted every possible avenue
and the supply of mustangs still exceeds the demand.
They have just come to the reality that it will remain
that way and something else needs to be done.

<<The three adoptions rule is not good, too many good
ones get passed up just based on color. I went to one
near me and all the colorful ones were gone by the
second day. I saw plenty of outstanding looking ones
remaining.>>

That is of NO fault of the BLM but of the public! I
personaly know of an excellent bay mustang mare that
was adopted - she only cost her owner a mere $125
because no one wanted a bay. There loss her gain :)

I know this is a touchy subject, but what the BLM is
passing isn't all that drastic or disgusting. They are
giving the horses three chances for adoption - all you
have to do to help is go adopt yourself a mustang. The
alternative is sold to for slaughter - which means
life to another being - just think of it that way.
