Re: [RC] At the end of my rope.. - Catherine Pritchett

"....Also, simply following someone's "method" (be it Parelli or anyone
else)
does not a horseman make--that ability to "read" the horse does not always
come with the tapes and the lectures..."

I would agree, but, people like Parelli, Anderson, Reis allow people who want to train and better understand their horses a place to start so they don't have to re-invent the wheel. They after all work with thousands of horses, many hours every day, all year long for in some cases such as Tom Dorrance, decades. No way I can hope to develop on my own the insight that guy has/had(?) in his little finger. I can however read and listen to what he and others are willing to pass on and use it with my own knowledge and skill in working with my horses to better understand them. None of these guys are the be all and end all, but they do occassionally have insight that can help an astute owner better understand why their horses do what they do.

They make it a bit easier to "read" your horse but not fool proof. Some times even those guys miss read an animal. As you say, each horse is an individual. My gelding made me look like the greatest trainer in the world! The timing between the two of us was perfect. His sister on the other hand made me look like I'd never even seen a horse before. For the life of me I couldn't get the timing right with her. We got there, but I had to try a lot of stuff with her. I might add that we later discovered that she only has approximatly 20% vision in one eye. So some times there are physical reasons for your horse not "getting it".

Now that said, the person watching the tapes and reading the books has to have some basic understanding of the animal they are working with so they know when some of these guru's are blowing smoke up their you know what and a couple of them do exactly that!

So, yeah, in the end, those trainers and what they have to offer are only tools, but they can be valuable tools saving you and your horse a lot of time and heart ache.

Cathy
