Tank heaters are 1500 W. For a long run you need a 12 ga. cord. If the cord is outside in the air, the issue is not a safety one. The voltage at the heater will be reduced, thus lowering the amount of heat produced, but the heater will not be damaged, and it will not electrocute anyone. Things with motors, and electronics are what is damaged by low voltage.


The safety issues revolving around long permanent extension cords are that the insulation will eventually be compromised (time, sunlight damage, movement, animal chewing, kids, vehicles, horses feet, etc.) leading to problems.
