Re: [RC] Fw: [RC] DAL Election / Weight Divisions!! - Barbara McCrary

That's a very good point, and one we addressed years ago on the BOD. At that
time, we decided not to get too worked up about it, and if you're talking
FAIR, it isn't. But as wiser minds have often said, "LIFE isn't fair." My
personal preference would be to drop weight divisions all together and go
back to one national champion and one regional champion, based on
accumulated points. It's become too complicated....

I also notice when I'm riding that a lot of guys who I think MIGHT be my
HW competition are actually MWs--and the day I judged for BC, two riders
who are MWs actually outweighed me, because they WERE carrying lots of
"stuff." My hat is off to those folks who choose not to weigh with all
their "stuff" in order to meet a weight division cut-off. (Heck, I WISH
I
didn't weigh that much without my "stuff.") They are being honest about
the fact that at some point on any given ride, their horse might well NOT
be carrying HW weight, even if he does part of the time. (I know hubby's
horse carries HW weight when we add Easyboots, full water bottles, camera
bag, a winter jacket, etc.--but since he doesn't carry that much "stuff"
all the time, it would be less than honest of us to register hubby as a
HW.)

The issue gets further confounded in that the AERC rules don't even
require that the horse carry the rider (unlike CTR where the rider
has to be mounted any time they make forward motion along the trail).
Five pounds one way or the other in rider weight doesn't make much
difference if the rider is tailing up the hills, running down them,
and jogging alongside in between for maybe half the ride.
