would cause otherwise fairly knowledgeable riders to make a variety of

Then IMO we need to look long and hard at the Tevis since I have heard
many  times that horses were "standing everywhere on jugs"

Again, look at the percentages.  With roughly 240 starting riders, there
would have to have been nearly 50 horses on jugs at Tevis to approach the
same percentage.

I point out that you are in favor of going back to the old system on
choosing  a National Champion and are therefore biased against the
current system.

Just trying to put all comments into perspective.

Susan, the REASON I am in favor of the old system is because of the flaws
in the new one.  That is not bias--it is observation of how both systems
have operated, and logical conclusions based upon what I've observed. 
Some presaged that the lack of interest and the problems would happen--and
indeed they have.
