RE: [RC] ?Saddle for Wide-Backed Horse? - Ranelle Rubin

Title: Message
When I had a wide backed horse, and Arab who was 6 at the time and whose back was obviously still changing, after hauling him from tack store to tack store, purchasing several saddles that did not work, I finally found a saddle that did and has worked for every horse I have ridden since (imagine that!)..It is a Skyhorse aka Skyrider. They are no longer made, but can be found if one is diligent. The entire tree is on hinges so it adjusts to fit the angle of any horses' back.  I am not going to sit here and try to convince you this is the best saddle, etc..but I have riden everything from 14'2" Arabs to 17H t-breds with these saddles (I now have 3 in my barn) with only one horse who had any difficulties. He was a "inverted-back-head in the sky" horse I was training. Once I got his head down, his back where it needed to be, and got him working off his rear-end, he is fine with this saddle. He finished Tevis 2003 with this saddle on his back in 23rd looking like a million! Any of you who recieved or saw this years Tevis magazine, he is the horse who we leased to Mr Hasumi in 2003..great finish photo..

So there is my 2cents about saddles. I bought my third one this summer off of endurance.net because my son who is 11 needed a saddle, so I gave him my first Skyhorse and found a great deal on one. My boyfriend rides the other one.

Subject: [RC] ?Saddle for Wide-Backed Horse?

I have been using a Marciente saddle on my horse.  Recently found out it rocks on her back and doesn't fit.  I tried a Supracor underneath and she was still sore and unrideable after just 25 miles.  Just bought a Corrector Pad.  It has promise but:

1.  does not give my horse any protection from the ring being up against her skin when I cinch.

2.  even with 2 mule shims in front I can still feel pressure on the center part of her back (not backbone but on the sides of it).

3.  It sits me up higher than I want even though I do like being balanced with only the front raised up higher.  I checked all 3 of my Morgans and they all are the same with ribs that spread OUT, not down, I can even see it distinctly on my 5 month old.

When looking at them, the highest point of their backs is right in that center area where most other horses dip down and where all saddles I have and have seen have a low point on the tree.

I have been told that Arabian backs are similar to Morgans so I am asking RideCamp people where there are LOTS of Arabs.  Do you have wide, table top backs and how do you handle this?  I have heard of an Arabian tree on saddles.  What does this mean?

Thanks in advance.

Catherine
