[RC] Fear and getting over it - Patti Pankiewicz-Fuchs

Never fails, how just when I am in the midst of dealing with an 'issue', ridecamp starts discussing it. Who needs the archives? LOL

It was so great to read all everyone's stories and suggestions regarding fear recently. Sera was 'broke' in March and ridden one to three times a week through the beginning of August. Then I went on vacation, then I got sick, then Frances and Jeane arrived. Prior to her break she had been doing really well in the neighborhood, (dirt roads, 4 wheelers, airboats, etc)  very confident...though we had only ridden in the Preserve maybe 5 times. Two times of which, I fell off due to spooks. But my confidence was improving greatly.....just before the big break....and last Thursday it was finally time, no excuses to get on and go to the Preserve. The neighborhood was out due to too much storm debris. We brought her good-role-model-buddy but I was still terrified. So I used some visualization and some deep breathing, like other ridecampers had suggested, and a prayer too.

We had a GREAT ride. A couple little startles and one very, very minor spook wherein I kept my balance just fine, thank you very much. Never would have thought she would be so good after such a long break.

Thank you to all the ridecampers for sharing their stories. You helped  me realize that it's ok to be scared, but if you just "cowgirl up" and face it you can get by it. I especially like (I think it was) Angie who talked about percentages. Sera and I are increasing our postive percentages out in the Preserve little by little and having more fun each time.
