Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] fear of arabs, mounting - Jena Williams

I don't think it is a silly fear. I have noticed that I do not get up or down from the horse as "nimbly" as I used to. I used to be able to do a "german" dismount, swing and click my heels together over the butt, twist and land facing forward. Now I am happy if I can get off without landing on my behind! When I broke my arm it was during a mount (he bolted), and I have seen numerous people go right over the other side when getting on. (that is funny by the way! always beginners) I have been tempted to have my husband build me a dummy horse that I can work on my mounts and dismounts without torturing my horse. Can't bring myself to ask. I think he would think I was silly.

On Tara, I think your last mare kinda set you up wrong. I would be glad to work with you and her. Just ride with you if you want. You know I went through a lot of trouble with Temba. What built our confidence up was being able to ride with someone that would let me ride where he and I were comfortable. If only felt safe riding to the end of the street, that is what we did. When I felt him "check out" on trail we went home. I got off often (as you know!) if I was not comfortable, and would remount when he seemd calm again. I would be afraid to ride Tess, she is one hot little mare with strong opinions, so you are a good rider. You just have to get to know Tara and what to expect from her on the trail.

I have a silly fear...I hate mounting and dismounting. Once on board I am
ok. My mare is tall so I always have to stand on something. The fear is even
worse at rides...I've almost not ridden at the last minute becuse I felt I
couldn't get on board. My mare does act silly when I first get on at rides...due to
excitement as she isn't this way at home...she'll either do a half rear then
lunge forward and might buck...but I'm used to that. I don't know why I am
afraid of mounting...and dismounting even. Never had a wreck that way...plenty of
other ways but not that!

The other thing I am afraid of is Arabs. I have a lovely purebred Arabian
mare. She came from a show barn so doesn't have any trail experience. She's not a
spooky mare, has no bad habits...I've ponied her everywhere and ridden her
with other horses but am so scared to take her out alone, and I know that will
translate to her. I'm about ready to sell her since I can't seem to get past
this. This is the second Arab I've gotten to try to make into an endurance horse
and for some reason I am afraid of them. The irony is my Morgan is show bred
and can run very hot, but that doesn't scare me at all. I've been told I'm a
decent rider but can't get pst this "arab fear." OK...now go ahead and laugh at
me!
