[RC] The Numbers Are Running Against Us - rides2far

When I go on the trails there are very few people on Arabs. You see
paints, QH's but where I ride (FL) what you seem most are gaited
horses > mostly walking horses. T

When I drive down the interstate there are very few of the new Mustangs,
far more Honda Accords, but don't those Mustangs look when they pass you?
The more of'em you see pass you while you're in your nondiscript Accord,
the more you think, I'm gonna get one of *those* someday. :-)

Another thing you might consider. I have 5 geldings in my field. One 22
year old, two 15 year olds, and 2 four year olds. The older horses are
still going strong, don't know how long the 22 year old will last but the
end doesn't appear in sight since he already placed 7th in a 50 this
year. The two 15 year olds have years & years use left in them. Maybe
the fact that our horses fit their feet, and aren't 1200 lbs on a 00
shoe, means they last longer and don't *have* to be replaced as often?

The registry's record numbers are pretty predictable since they said over
1/2 the horses are over 16. That's the foal crop of 1988, the last year
or so of the big boom before the tax changes. Nice to see that the
breeders cut back and we're only producing riding horses now instead of a
bunch of tax deductions. Since few people notify them when a horse dies I
just wonder how many of those horses are still alive today when so many
of them were probably never even broke to ride.
